I've managed to get Shizuku mostly online now, but I'm still waiting on an external hard drive enclosure so I can transfer all my old stuff. I'll likely have that done in the next few days, but first, Debian.
It didn't work out. Debian GNU/Linux 4.0r3 installed correctly, but completely fell over when it came to my LCD monitor. The X server failed to detect any monitors, and unceremoniously dumped me at a command prompt. Kubuntu 8.04 on the other hand installed correctly, fully detected my monitor, and only failed on the Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer that ended up being used instead of the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS, which was to be expected.
My only criticism would be with the manual partitioner. The Debian text-based installer allowed me to specify partition sizes in any unit I wanted, tebibytes, gibibytes, mebibytes. The Kubuntu graphical installer on the other hand would only accept mebibytes. So, what's 25 gibibytes in mebibytes? Anyone? I actually have to calculate with a pen and paper to work out that I wanted a 25600 MiB partition. Surely that's not how it should be. Otherwise though, fantastic work by Canonical, a class act.
Just uploaded a small update to the FAQ and finally fixed the test section. All pages there should be working again.
March archiving now complete.
I've got a new desk, speakers, and keyboard here (all of which are great). I should have a new PC either on Saturday or some time next week. I've figured out how my wireless router works, so I shouldn't lose my internet connection at all. I'm planning to try Debian GNU/Linux with my new PC, so my feelings about that may be on pointlessness in the near future.
